Questions and Answers about STAR
(Standardized Testing and Reporting Program)

What is the STAR Testing Program?
The tests in the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program, which is authorized by state law until 2011, are an important part of the California Assessment System. These tests are administered each spring to measure how well students in California’s public schools are achieving the California content standards. These achievement tests target English-language arts and mathematics in grades two through eleven. In addition, tests in science and history-social science are given in selected grades. The STAR Testing Program consists of the California Standards Test (CST), the California Modified Assessment (CMA), the California Alternate Performance Assessment (CAPA), and the Standards-based Tests in Spanish (STS).

Who will be tested?
All students, in grades 2 through 11, in California public schools must participate in the STAR Program unless they are exempt from testing. This includes students with disabilities and students who are English Learners. There is only one reason why a student would be exempt from taking all or part of the test: A student’s parent or guardian submits a request in writing that the student not take the test.

When will the test be given?
For Santa Paula Elementary Schools, the testing period will be from April 26th to May 18th.

Will I see my child’s STAR Student Report? When will I receive it?
Yes. The district will mail your child’s test results to you by the end of September.

Where can I find out more about STAR?
To learn more about STAR contact your school or district office and ask for the STAR Coordinator. You may also contact the California Department of Education or Educational Testing Services, the test publisher, for additional information.
